How much is too much?

The question for Today is: Is the soccer industry spending too much on players that aren't amazing?
If  you think about it for a long time it's a tough question, but I have the answer.

Look at the statistics of some of the transfers of some of the best players in the world:

                                                                                                                            David Beckham
1996     Ronaldo           $17 Million
1997     Ronaldo           $30 Million
2000     Figo                 $56 Million
2001     Zidane             $64 Million
2003     Ronaldinho     $32.5 Million
2003     Beckham         £25 Million

As you can see the players get more and more expensive.  For me that is the first piece of evidence that the soccer industry is spending too much.  Anyway, to me Ronaldo was better then Figo in his good times.  Still, Figo was much more expensive - but this isn't the big step. If you look at the statistics below and compare with them with the ones at the top you will see that now teams are spending much too much money.

The newer transfers:                                                                                                   Darren Bent

2009     Kaka              £56 Million
2009     C. Ronaldo    £80 Million
2009     Alonso           £30 Million
2011     Dzeko            £27 Million
2010     Milner            £28 Million  + Stephen Ireland (£8 Million)
2011     Bent               £18 Million

If you compare these players you would be saying (according to the transfer fees) that Kaka is 3 times as good as Ronaldo. That is not in any way true!!! You could also say Milner is as good as Beckham; that is also complete nonsense!!! I think that the money spent today is too much. These teams need to think smarter and buy the right players for the right price. Clearly Milner is not worth £36 Million!!! With £36 Million I would buy Essien, not Milner. The way this is going on and on, in 30 years Messi will be worth £1 Billion.  Bent isn't worth the money either, sorry. I always thought someone good should buy him but, not for £18 Million. With £18 Million I would rather have bought Van Persie, (but of course that could be because I'm Dutch).

There are some amazing players that are worth the money out there, but most of them aren't half as good. If you compare Manchester City and Barcelona, who is better and why? I will tell you who's better and why: Barcelona is better because they discover great players and sign them for nothing. If you look at the team, most of them are players who came from the youth team.  Mostly teams that have at least a quarter of their team made up of youth players are the greatest teams.  Now that is smart shopping!

Now if you look back at this post, what is your opinion of the original question - does the industry spend too much money on its players or not?  You know my view... hope you enjoyed my weekly report.

Can the Rock-Bottom's Climb Back Up?

As you noticed, I changed my blog's name and my website's name. But I will still write about the same things.
Today I'll be writing about the Rock-Bottoms. The title is asking if the last places of England, Germany and the Netherlands can get out of relegation zone; if they can stay with the big clubs; and if they can stay in the first league. Today I will make an analysis about that.

                                                           GERMANY
We will be starting with Germany. In Germany last place is Mönchengladbach. Can they get back to the middle? Below this are the statistics and the answer.

Bottom four standings              Relegation spot: *
                           TEAM                        PTS         GAMES
                     15. 1. FC Köln                    19              19
                     16. FC Sankt Pauli *           19              19
                     17. VFB Stuttgart   *           16              19
                     18. Mönchengladbach *      13              19

                   Last 3 games :

 1. FC Köln:   1. FC Köln-Werder Bremen      3-0
                       Kaiserslautern-1. FC Köln         1-1
                       Schalke 04- 1. FC Köln             3-0

FC Sankt       Hoffenheim-FC Sankt Pauli       2-2
Pauli:            FC Sankt Pauli-Freiburg             2-2                      Havard Nordtveit (on loan from Arsenal
FC Sankt Pauli-Mainz                2-4                       to Gladbach)

Stuttgart:        B. Dortmund-Stuttgart                1-1
                      Stuttgart-Mainz                           1-0
                      Stuttgart-B. München                  3-5

Gladbach:     Gladbach-Leverkusen                 1-3
                     1. FC Nürnberg-Gladbach           0-1
                     Gladbach-Hamburger SV            1-2

My opinion:
The way I see it, Gladbach is staying right where they are. Their good signings (including Nordtveit on loan from Arsenal) will keep the team from going down.
I think 1. FC Köln will end up going down to the second, also because they did not sign anyone big, and their new coach is helping, but not a lot.
VFB Stuttgart is easily going to stay in the first league given their recent games: they will make it.
FC Sankt Pauli will go down as last place the way I see it... they are going further and further and further down.
Werder Bremen is falling down, and even though they're not in the bottom four, they will go down anyway.
Here is my conclusion to this league:

16.   Werder Bremen
17.   1. FC Köln
18.   FC Sankt Pauli

                                                              ENGLAND
In England you probably know that West Ham United is last place, but it's still a tight race to the finish line.

Bottom four Standings                              Relegation spot: *

         TEAM                 PTS           GAMES
17. Birmingham             23                 22
18. Wigan                      22                 23
19. Wolves                     21                 23
20. West Ham                21                 24

                                             Last 3 games:

Birmingham:   Man. United-Birmingham        5-0
                        Birmingham-Aston Villa          1-1
                        Blackpool-Birmingham            1-2

Wigan:            Arsenal-Wigan                          3-0
                        Wigan-Fulham                          1-1
                        Bolton-Wigan                           1-1

Wolves:          Wolves-Liverpool                      0-3
                       Man.City-Wolves                      4-3
                       Wolves-Chelsea                         1-0

West Ham      Everton-West Ham                    2-2
                       West Ham-Arsenal                    0-3
                       Newcastle-West Ham                5-0

                                                                                                     Demba Ba (Transfered from
                                                                                                     Hoffenheim to West Ham)

My opinion:
I had a very hard time figuring this out and it was a tight decision, but I came to a conclusion. Birmingham is definitely a team to go down, they just don't have enough quality. The only thing they can hope for is their new player David Bentley, who is only on loan.
One thing I am sure of, even though it was a tough decision, is that the Wolves are going to go down. The Wolves only bought wonder boy Adam Hammill.  That's an okay signing but they need bigger signings or the won't make it. The Wolves have actually got a good team but they don't click together; they still need some time to work on their chemistry as a team.  For example, they lost 4-3 against Manchester City - there you could see that the attack was played pretty well; however, the defense was exactly the opposite. I'm not saying the defense is bad because for another example the Wolves played a 1-1 against the better-than-average team of Everton.
West Ham to me will sadly but truly go down although they bought good players like Demba Ba. I don't think it is going to work out as proven in the Carling Cup Semi-Final versus Birmingham (3-2).  Here is my final answer.

18.     West Ham
19.     Birmingham
20.     Wolves

                                                             By the way
The reason I will not be writing statistics about Italy and Spain is because it always ends the same.

                                                           Netherlands

Lastly I will report about Holland. In Holland Willem II is last place. Can they bounce back up?

Bottom 4 Standings:                                              Relegation Spot :*
TEAM           PTS            GAMES                                                  Play-off spot :+
15. Vitesse            18                  20
16. Excelsior   +    16                  20
17. vvv-Venlo +    10                  20
18 Willem II   *      7                   20

Last 3 Games:

Vitesse: Willem II-Vitesse          1-0
              NAC-Vitesse                1-1
              Vitesse-Ajax                 0-1

Excelsior: Roda JC-Excelsior    3-0
               Excelsior-Groningen   2-2
                 Excelsior-NAC         1-3

vvv-Venlo: vvv-Venlo-PSV      0-3
                   vvv-Venlo-Utrecht  1-2
                   vvv-Venlo-Roda JC 0-4

Veli Lampi ( Transferred from once
Swiss Champion FC Zürich to Willem II)
Willem II:  Willem II-Vitesse     1-0
                 Den Haag-Willem II  2-1
                  NEC-Willem II         3-1

My opinion:
This league is being is being reviewed because I'm Dutch and my favorite team is Feyenoord. Anyway, Vitesse is going to the play-offs as I see it; first of all because Willem II won their first game against them, and also because  they won't make it up through the Transfer Window, but rather down.
Excelsior is the team in the clear for me; this team from Rotterdam is doing okay compared to vvv-Venlo and the others. I believe Excelsior will also make it because of their amazingly fast striker Guyon Fernandez.
vvv- Venlo is the loser of the lot right now. Statistically seen, vvv-Venlo will end up last, I think. The only reason they stayed in the first league anyway was because Keisuke Honda played for them, but he's gone now, taking his team of stylists with him.
Willem II is doing well and starting to win and draw the games they need to win. This was proven by their victory against Vitesse last weekend. Willem II have actually made some good moves by buying once Swiss champion Veli Lampi, pictured above. Here is my final answer:

                                                                                                             Win the play-off's: ¨£
16. Vitesse ¨£
17. Willem II¨£
18. vvv-Venlo

Manchester City signings: Good or bad?

MANCHESTER CITY SIGNINGS: GOOD OR BAD?

A couple of days ago Edin Dzeko was signed for 27 MILLION!!! Now that's a lot of money. This is actually a great signing, and he's also worth the money, but a lot of the players they sign, end up on the bench for half of the time. You can't just fork out something like 10 Million for players like J. Boateng so he plays half of the games of City. J. Boateng is an amazing player, he deserves more. Below all the players that were bought in the last 2 years and costed a lot of money are underlined, the others not. All the players that played more then 15 games are diagonal.

                                                                     Joe Hart
                                                                        GK
          Richards/                 Kompany                                          Tourè                       Zabaleta
          Boateng                        CD                                                 CD                            LB
               RB

      A. Johnson                Barry                De Jong                Yaya Touré                  Milner
           RM                        CM                     CM                        CM                            LM

                                                                     Tèvez
                                                                        ST

Now the question was are the signings good or bad. I think neither. My opinion is the signings were OK.
The reason is only 6 to 7 new players are usually on the field. They bought up to 14 new players between this season and last season. Also, even though they've made a step forward, the money they spent was much too much. They spent over 1 billion pounds over 2 years!!! Maybe Dzeko will bring them to first place but if not, there signings were not great, but still between OK and good. The last con I have is the Transfer fee.
The transfer fee's are to high even for players with this much quality. For an example a lot of people say Adebayor is going to be sold, but he'll only be sold for about a 1/3 of what they bought him for.

This is my analysis on Manchester City's signings: They are between Ok and good because of the transfer fee's.

The Top Ten!!!

Today I'm making my first post!!! Since I'm starting in early 2011, I decided to make my own top TEN for 2010!!!

The Top Ten Soccer Players of 2010

10.  Theofanis Gekas
T. Gekas is the Top scorer of the Bundesliga. He's the one (and was the one) keeping Frankfurt from falling down the table. HANDS DOWN!
Gekas.jpg

9. Rafael Van der Vaart
Van der Vaart is one of the best players in the Premier League  this season, and he's not only scoring but also preparing and making play. Tottenham Hotspurs need him.

8. Samir Nasri
Samir Nasri has to be No. 8 (and not only because he wears the shirt number 8). He's also been in top form at Arsenal and he scored more this season then in the last 2 seasons he's been there! He would have been higher on the list if he had played better in big games such as versus Chelsea. I'm a big Arsenal fan, so when I went to their game against Chelsea on the 27/12/10, I was psyched when they won 3-1; but I noticed Nasri didn't really play well, and he also didn't play well against Manchester United.

7. Diego Milito
Diego Milito won a lot with Inter Milan in 2010. Everyone says it was Mourinho, but I think at least a third of their wins came from Diego Milito. For example, in the final of the Champions League he scored one goal and got the assist for the other one. That is why he is number 7 in the list.

6. Arjen Robben
At  No. 6 I have Arjen Robben: now remember, this is the year 2010, not the season 2010. In the season 2009/2010 Arjen Robben became champion with Bayern München. B. München became partly champion because of Arjen Robben. This year Bayern München is doing much worse because Arjen Robben is injured!

5. Dimitar Berbatov
5th place belongs to Berbatov, you all probably think because of his start in 2010 (of which he sat 3/4 on the bench he isn't good enough) because Sir Alex Ferguson thought he wasn't good enough. He proved him wrong when he started 2010/2011 in great form and then shot 5 goals against Blackburn in the first half of the season.

4. Andrés Iniesta
Andrés Iniesta is in every Top Ten list after he scored the winning goal against Holland in the 2010 World Cup; before that he was part of the greatest team in the world, but never really in the spotlight. Now though, he could win the Ballon D'or. For me he's gonna stay at 4th place.

3. Cristiano Ronaldo
Well you knew he was coming, but out of my perspective only at 3rd place. I know he's one of the best players in the world, but he strikes me as a show-off. I  have proof too: I once bought a magazine and it had all the stats of the Champions League in it. It said Cristiano Ronaldo scored the most goals in the Champions League, but he also shot the most balls heading for goal. So there you have it, the reason he scores so much is because he tries so much. He doesn't care about other players - he is an egomaniac! No teamwork happening here...

2. Xavi
If you want to know why I put Xavi in 2nd place it's because he deserves a little credit for playing for Barcelona but not wanting the attention (so not like Cristiano Ronaldo). Xavi is (in my rating) the best midfielder Barcelona's had for years. He's got the best passes to Messi, Pedro and Villa.

1. Lionel Messi
You all knew this was coming. Lionel Messi is the best Player of 2010 in my rating. Above, you saw I thought Xavi was behind Messi's skill. But Messi also makes 1/2 of his goals without assistance. Plus when he gets an assist he always finishes it Ice-Cool.

Your,
Yor
