If you think about it for a long time it's a tough question, but I have the answer.
Look at the statistics of some of the transfers of some of the best players in the world:
David Beckham
1996 Ronaldo $17 Million
1997 Ronaldo $30 Million
2000 Figo $56 Million
2001 Zidane $64 Million
2003 Ronaldinho $32.5 Million
2003 Beckham £25 Million
As you can see the players get more and more expensive. For me that is the first piece of evidence that the soccer industry is spending too much. Anyway, to me Ronaldo was better then Figo in his good times. Still, Figo was much more expensive - but this isn't the big step. If you look at the statistics below and compare with them with the ones at the top you will see that now teams are spending much too much money.
The newer transfers: Darren Bent
2009 Kaka £56 Million
2009 C. Ronaldo £80 Million
2009 Alonso £30 Million
2011 Dzeko £27 Million
2010 Milner £28 Million + Stephen Ireland (£8 Million)
2011 Bent £18 Million
If you compare these players you would be saying (according to the transfer fees) that Kaka is 3 times as good as Ronaldo. That is not in any way true!!! You could also say Milner is as good as Beckham; that is also complete nonsense!!! I think that the money spent today is too much. These teams need to think smarter and buy the right players for the right price. Clearly Milner is not worth £36 Million!!! With £36 Million I would buy Essien, not Milner. The way this is going on and on, in 30 years Messi will be worth £1 Billion. Bent isn't worth the money either, sorry. I always thought someone good should buy him but, not for £18 Million. With £18 Million I would rather have bought Van Persie, (but of course that could be because I'm Dutch).
There are some amazing players that are worth the money out there, but most of them aren't half as good. If you compare Manchester City and Barcelona, who is better and why? I will tell you who's better and why: Barcelona is better because they discover great players and sign them for nothing. If you look at the team, most of them are players who came from the youth team. Mostly teams that have at least a quarter of their team made up of youth players are the greatest teams. Now that is smart shopping!
Now if you look back at this post, what is your opinion of the original question - does the industry spend too much money on its players or not? You know my view... hope you enjoyed my weekly report.
